Bogleheads,

All of you have great wealth of knowledge and kindness to help others. Hence I am reaching out to you for another milestone in my life where I desperately need your help. My daughter junior in high school is great academically and has some good achievements in speech and debate.
Her GPA is about 3.9 UW and we are in CA.
She is trying hard to find what she wants to do in college, but has no clue. I don't blame her as she has no exposure.
What field would you recommend ? She is good in STEM but is not sure she wants to pursue the Comp Science field that her dad pursued.

Any insights in helping us find a direction will be appreciated.
If she's open to it have her 'Graph her Life'.
It's an exercise that reasonably should take 1-2 hours, which is challenging to reserve in day to day life.

Start with a sheet of paper and draw an axis (giant 'L').
Label the y-axis "Happiness" and Label the x-axis "Time".
Everyone starts at 0,0!
Add in your 3 Highpoints/Key Accomplishments/Milestones in life. (Really think about these. . . best of the best.)
Add in your 3 Lowpoints.
Draw a line connecting all of the points.
Take a 10 minute break.
Come back and circle the three Highpoints.
What do these Highpoints all have in common?
What were you doing when you achieved these?
Spend time thinking through it, find the connection and similarities.
Summarize & condense it down to only the essentials.

You were close to your Purpose at these Highpoints, and Your Purpose usually involves people.
Once you can articulate and describe your purpose, it's easier to select challenges and opportunities that align.

Try not to select items that run counter to your purpose.
If you're keen to help people learn, and grow.
Don't select a education/job as an investment banker because it makes lots of $$.

DM me if you have specific questions. In the broadest sense, it is a huge advantage to know yourself before deciding which way to grow.

good luck,
galving
