Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Re: Medigap G Plan and Part D Price increases.

My wife has been on Medicare with a Medigap plan g and Cigna Part D plans. The price increases are starting to get scary.
I won't be eligible until late next year. We are both retired and live in Illinois. She is starting to research possible changes during open enrollment.

My understanding is in Illinois she can change Medigap plans without underwriting around her birthday but has to stay with the same provider(Aetna) and a plan than is same coverage or less. Is this accurate? If so we are stuck with Aetna. Do they have multiple plan G's at Aetna? We will definitely be sticking with a G plan...have heard N and even High Deductible G plans could be an alternative but I don't think they would be a good fit for her.
I will refer you to a video explaining the nuisances in the state of Illinois. I just think this video provides a good explanation of how Medicare works in Illinois. At marker 2:10, the video covers multiple discounts (Ei: household, wearable) you might be eligible for on a Medigap plan. Illinois have several conditions and limits around changing Medigap plans that are unique to just Illinois. And this video covers them starting at marker 3:40. This should help clarify and questions you may.

Two notes: First, this video was done September 2024. So does not cover or include the 2025 changes to Medicare. Second, may not be mentioned in the video, but a new law has been proposed and approved in Illinois that will fix the unique rule related to Medigap plans in Illinois. That law goes into effect January 2026.
