Personal Consumer Issues • Re: Do you have a lawyer (and should I/everyone)?

If you want a relationship with a lawyer then, as mentioned above, think about why you may need them. There are a lot of solo/small firms that handle bundles of services but only those bundles. Possible examples: trusts and estates, real estate, and business ownership law OR family law, criminal defense, and personal injury OR social security law, disability law, and creditor-debtor law OR bankruptcy law, medical malpractice, and construction law. These are just examples, lawyers mix and match their practice area but usually stick to them.

Think through what you might be looking for. Look through websites of local options and create a short list.

DW and I have never needed to hire a criminal defense lawyer but, incidentally, we have had introductory meetings with a few and have two phone numbers saved in our cell phones. We made sure each had 24/7 answering. As humans, we never know when we may make the wrong choice and need help. Or when our little kids may make the wrong choice. Or be with people that make the wrong choice. Both lawyers have our names and contact numbers, the names of our kids, and emergency contact information for people other than us. While we don't pay any sort of retainer DW, being the DW that she is, has both of them on the Christmas card list and they each get cookies for their offices.

I guess it makes us feel better in some way. Especially as the oldest is getting near driving age.
