They can if improperly stored. Some silver bars come in a hard plastic shrink wrap that can crack over time and let air in to discolor. Since they are bullion content, they can be stored in other materials without many consequences as they are mostly bullion content priced.Question for those who do buy silver bars. Don't they get tarnished?

Bullion coins should be stored in tubes as their resale ease depends on being in uncirculated and untarnished condition. Numismatic coins of value should be treated gingerly and stored in non-PVC type containers if they are not slabbed.
