Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Re: Employer coverage for jury duty

Thanks for all the thoughtful commenters on this thread - I'll respond to some of the questions people raised:
* My case is held in a CA state court
* I have not gone through the Voir Dire process yet, only the initial jury pre-selection process in which the Judge explained some basic facts about the case and there was an opportunity to ask to be excused based on personal hardship (my request was denied while dozens of others were excused on the spot). We also had to fill in a questionnaire screening for bias and ability to serve on the court which I answered honestly.
* I don't know what my chances are of actually being selected to serve on this jury. I am very concerned though that the chances are high, as many potential jurors have already been excused on day 1 based on personal hardship and with this being such a lengthy trial I imagine many others will "find ways" to improve their odds of not serving.
* For Jury service in CA I think the state pays 15$ per day
* I have never looked at the details of my employer's unlimited PTO (paid time out) policy but it is generally understood to mean that as long as you perform your duties and management approves you can take paid time off. In practice employees do not report taking time off in any HR system, just put it on their calendar, but I think it is likely that this is just due to lack of enforcement and officially we do have to report time away somewhere where it can be tracked.
* My original question here was not about making my employer pay my salary for the duration of my jury service, although that would be very nice. I want to understand the merit of HR's claim that I can't take any PTO during my service. If I reach an agreement with my direct manager that I can take 3/4 weeks of during the trial, why is this not allowed? Usually I don't need to report to HR what I do during my paid time off.
