Over 20 years ago I decided I wanted to learn bass guitar. I could have easily afforded the best bass guitar and amplifier. But I told myself you have to "earn" those purchases, i.e., prove I was serious. That led me to buying the cheapest bass guitar around. Only $70. I practiced for a while and then stopped. Never "earned" the better equipment.Quoting my last post:Please don't under-estimate this downside, especially given your own comment:One possible downside to consider is that Tonal cannot be used offline. It requires an internet connection at all times.
https://knowledge.tonal.com/s/article/WiFi-RequirementsHow well do you think Tonal will maintain their online services if they are struggling financially? What if they go bankrupt? Not sure anybody would want a business maintaining $49/mo services for such a small user-base.Tonal is being sued by their primary supplier for non-payment of bills.
There have been many cases where companies go bust and leave their customers with expensive, useless paperweights. There was a juice-smashing device like this, and a beer brewer that come to mind.
And all because they insist on making this an online subscription-service product, instead of a durable good that stands on it's own (perhaps with some unnecessary bonus features you could subscribe to optionally).
Like the OP, I make a habit of coming here when I'm considering a big purchase of a product that has other competitors in the market.
Tonal requires membership for the first 12 months, then you can cancel.
I suppose if they went belly up at some point you'd miss the firmware updates, but all the other features are still available.
I like the advice to start a program with free weights on my own, then if I a) actually do it and b) need or want a fancier device, consider the Tonal or Nordic Track.
As always, appreciate the advice around here.
Therefore, do first prove to yourself that you can be a disciplined exerciser, sticking to a schedule no matter what.
From Craigslist for $225 I got a nice used bench, Olympic bar, about 400 pounds of weights, and a half rack. It's such a priority in my life that it's all in my living room!
I had a certain reason for deciding to do barbells but was not prepared or expecting the great improvement in brings to quality of life in so many ways.
As mentioned at least once above .... I am a follower of Starting Strength.

I can also easily afford the Tonal but I'm sticking to the tried and true barbells. All of which I own above. After 13 years of using it all .. nothing has required a cent to maintain any of it. Some day, possibly, the half rack may need to be replaced.
