Update:
Ended up costing us a lot more than we initially thought. We pretty much got a Cadillac Escalade for a Toyota Corolla problem.
We wanted TWO 50amp 240 volt outlets. (I don't want to get into why we wanted a second.)
Here is what we got.
• New Subpanel to the Garage, and Two 50amp Circuits in the Garage
• Install a 110A breaker in the main panel for the new garage subpanel
• Run the cable from the main panel in the basement, thru the finished portions of the basement, thru the mechanical room, finally to the panel in the garage.
• Install Square D QO subpanel
• Run (2) new 50A 240V circuits from the new subpanel to two different walls in the garage.
• Both circuits will be GFCI protected
• Install (2) surface mounted metal boxes on the walls
• Install (1) 120V outlet near the panel
• Install (2) 50A and (1) 120V receptacles
• Whole Home Surge Protector Install the Eaton Ultra 100,000 Amp discharge current capacity suppressor. This unit includes a limited lifetime warranty and other monetary benefits. Install 2-pole 50 Amp breaker in the panel for this device.
Total cost. $5k
We knew it is a lot. Probably $1.5k more than we currently need. But we went with this option because we absolutely don't want to deal with another electrical work in the near future and we plan to live in this house in the foreseeable future.
