In addition, if you move into the next bracket due to higher than expected returns or something, it will only be 24%. A 2-3% difference in marginal tax brackets would not be enough to induce me to do Roth conversions.So, by the time I'm 75, the combined income of my pension, SS and the RMD still won't currently change my 22% federal tax status.
I have been doing conversions in the 12% bracket in order to avoid expected future 22% (may also avoid an IRMAA tier when there is a sole survivor).
