The other day, I ate at a restaurant that did not have a table-side payment device option. I told the waitress that I did not want to let my credit card out of sight to pay for the meal. So she escorted me to the edge of the kitchen to the machine the restaurant uses to process card payments. At that machine, I could have used my physical card and/or Google Pay via my cellphone. I chose the latter; my physical card remained in my wallet.Mine either. But I live in semi-rural area and do not go to corporate restaurants. All the indies in this area are one-offs.This is definitely not my experience. Tableside payment is still very much the exception rather than the rule for us.I think every sit down restaurant we go to in the US now uses payment devices that are brought to the table and accept contactless payments. So no more server taking card back to the register where it is out of sight for 5-10 minutes. Definitely more reassuring if not also less likely to see fraudulent charges.
