Our experience with both Miele and Sub Zero refrigerators is that food stays fresher much longer. We have far less food waste than we did with consumer refrigerators. If you're not refrigerating a lot of fresh food on a normal basis the value proposition of a Sub Zero is not strong.Interesting that on such a practical forum as BH, there seems to be so little rational cost-benefit analysis on this one.
I understand paying over $11k for a frig if it truly adds to home resale value. But is there any real evidence of this - or is it wishful thinking? Or something less "rational" such as spouse acceptance factor?
Beyond that, the only advantage of a SubZero frig is that it´s "head and shoulders above" the competition. Does is really do a better job of keeping food cool? . I haven't seen any peer-reviewed stats showing this. My anecdotal experience, based upon several friends, is plenty of compressor failures, floor leaks, long and expensive servicing... I`ve yet to see anyone argue that the veggies taste better than with another frig. Pls. enlighten me.
But there are other notable benefits like pungent odors of certain foods don't permeate into other foods in the fridge. The seals on professional refrigerators are a totally different level of consumer brand refrigerators. It's almost as if you get a hermetic seal on each close. They never slam or make noise. The lighting efficacy is night and day superior and the physical depth of the refrigerators are 30-50% shallower than that of consumer models. This means no lost food buried in the back of the fridge. Everything is always visible and easy to access. Cleaning professional refrigerators is far easier. And they run quieter.
Is all of this worth the 4-5X cost of a consumer level product? To the vast majority of people it's not. And why the vast majority of homes don't have professional appliances. But DW and I find significant value in those benefits noted above, so for us it's worth it. But I can totally understand why someone would perceive this as a completely unnecessary luxury splurge. I remember when I used to scoff at the thought of paying 5 figures for a meat cooler.
