I wanted to post a follow-up after the great support I received here. I ran from the 6k estimate and found a great (amazing) shade tree guy. After reading the Honda forum discussions I printed for him, he agreed to check for alternative possibilities , and if he couldn't find any - to try that. He ended up putting the muzzler in (about $150). He also put in a much nicer oil, and replaced the spark plugs and cleaned everything out. No ring repair.
It's been about 6K miles since then, so I brought it back to him this weekend to take a look at the spark plugs and see how they were doing. They are clean as a whistle. The car has been running great and I haven't noticed any difference in terms of gas (but I don't follow super closely).
He's also a gem of a mechanic who owns multiple cars with 300K miles or more - he said it's easy to get a car to last if you maintain it like he does. So for all the stress of that moment, I'm really happy to have found a person to work on my car with that kind of track record. He also does woodworking so it's really nice taking the car over there and seeing all his art
Yayy!! Such a great outcome. Thanks so much bogleheads!!
