In rural areas in far off places you have two things you'll have to consider. The first is frequency of access to water. And the second is filtering it once you have a source. On long travel days you might only have access to water once per day which means you also need enough containers for a days worth of clean water and/or possibly a container to hold a days worth of unfitered water until you have an opportunity to filter it. Be wary that fake bottled water actually exists but I'd speculate for more rural areas that this in only the case where there are enough tourists that pass by along their journey to make it worthwhile. Whatever filtration choice you bring I would bring a backup as well. Normally for me that is some sort of steripen.
