Personal Consumer Issues • Hit and run victim... anyone have dash cam recommendations?

A week or so ago I was the victim of a non-injury hit and run rear-end collision. We took down what we could of the license plate, but we didn't get it right. Police said that the plate number didn't match any vehicles. They would try some variations, but I'm not holding my breath that they find the guy.

Anyway, insurance will cover the damage (but I'll be out my deductible if they can't find the guy).

So now I'm looking for dash cam recommendations. While I don't necessarily expect to be a hit-and-run victim again anytime soon, I sure wish I'd had a dash cam this time around. And every now and then there have been instances where it would have been nice/convenient to have one.

So does anyone have experience with dash cams? Any recommendations, or specific brands/models to avoid? I'm going to want front and rear cams. I don't really care about an interior camera. I'm assuming I'll want to hard wire (to take advantage of parking modes) and run the cable to the rear camera under trim/headliner. Will I need a professional install? Or am I likely to be able to install myself? (I'm a software guy that has built numerous computers from components, but I don't consider myself super-capable with home do-it-yourself projects).

I've been looking into Rexing, Viofo, Garmin, Vantrue, and Thinkware.

Anyone have experience with any of these brands' dash cam products?
