For both of ours, we worked out a reasonable monthly amount for rent, utlilities, books, food, and some routine activities, and then we transferred it to their account a few days before end of the month. They were then responsible to living within their means. If they wanted to get something not in the budget (e.g. expensive concert tickets), they could get a side job to earn more, or save up over some months.
