Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Re: Charity vetting: best practices

Regarding the high six figure income, I have a thought of add. Let’s say the CEO of said charity is often in a position of interacting with and influencing well heeled donors. The CEO needs some skill and comfort interacting with the wealthy. I don’t think there are many of us peons who have that skill. Does this justify the six figures compensation? Does the presence of well heeled donors mean that the organization is already flush?
If compensation is commensurate with workload and work done it’s not immediately a red flag. But many small charities aren’t really this, they’re just a way to launder money through non-profits. It really does need some investigation and usually finding the local ones that you can personally get involved with is a safer bet.

However, just because it’s small and local doesn’t mean it’s well run, so be sure to poke around.

Also you could consider working with people/charities to set up a “town improvement” charity dedicated to a particular result you’d like to see, like a new library, community center, park remodeling. But only if you enjoy the hands-on activity. Or find projects like that already in swing. Often the “administrative costs” are already covered and they’re trying to fill out the funds for construction.

You might even get a little plaque that you can have BOGLEHEADS on or something. :sharebeer
I think we are talking different animals. I’m thinking about the university I graduated from in 1979. I owe them. They also graduated my two children. I’m saying, as we’ve seen in the news media lately, the large charitable organizations need a skilled manager to ensure the donors are satisfied with the quality of outcomes with regard to their charitable donations. I don’t think this applies to my local community charities. I’ve been reading about the presidents of the Ivy League universities who have special skills not lively to be found in the amateur division. (No comment on the current campus news.)
