I work in a professional services industry (not financial services) and am constantly exhorted by business managers to "just grab a coffee!" with prospective clients to drum up business.
It has never once not felt scummy to me to try and buy off a good chunk of someone else's time with a measly coffee (heck, even a lunch) so that I can soft pitch them on our services (which are objectively pretty fungible with those of our competitors).
