Thanks. Will certainly not be looking for a job any soon, I'm in no rush, as detailed in my post.

I assume he is accounting for a downturn in the job market..maybe it takes longer than you think to get a new job, at least that was also my first though, but I am over 50 and I would certainly be actively job hunting. Without knowing your industry and given you are just 40, you may be doing the right thing. I would definitely start hunting now.

I was laid of Nov 2019 similar to your case, on payroll until the end of Feb 2020, and started with the outplacement company the same day to get coaching, resume refresh, etc. Landed a job the same February, so I never lost one pay and could save the entire severance package.
Downturn in the job market is indeed something to take into account.
My industry is SWE, AI, Generative AI. So, it is a hot area and openings exist.
I will prepare in March, interview in April, and start in May / June. This is the earliest timeline I can think of. I will definitely spend time with my kid until May.
