Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Re: Restaurant 'Service Charge' & sales tax

Taking the opposing view as food for thought (pun intended), next time you have your oil changed (or pay for anything where parts and service are part of the bill), check your bill; you pay sales tax on the oil, the filter, and the labor. Thinking and customs have changed since 2020. Consider the 20% service charge as "labor" for your dining experience; it's going to be taxed. Feel free to change your own thinking and customs to compensate. Tipping has never been compulsory until recently, when people have been guilt-tripped into tipping higher than customary and/or for no good reason at all. You can't blame restauranteurs and wait staff for trying to earn more. Be your own advocate. Respond with your wallet or your feet. :beer
