It's also a matter of repairability. I keep things long enough that stuff starts to break and get replaced. My wife laptop fan starts to whine, replacing that fan is a heck of a lot easier to do on the desktop. You can do all of that with a laptop. The only reason I can think of to get a desktop is because it's more upgradeable. To each their own, but I buy a system which I'm confident will last me long enough that by the time I'd like it upgraded in one way, I'd like it upgraded in other ways and I'd just as soon buy a new system. You don't really save much doing it yourself like you used to and to me it's not worth the hassle.I also prefer having a full mechanical keyboard with full travel and dual monitors and a decent mouse.
Components tend to be a bit cheaper on the desktop and the cooling is better. The GPU on desktop is usually better than the one on the laptop. I feel that I am in the minority and people tend to like the flexibility laptop brings.
