For many years, I've only used a single card - Capital One Rewards. Originally, it was a flat 2% back. It dropped to 1% some time ago.
A few weeks ago, I decided to reorganize. I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon.
Chase Amazon Prime -
$100 gift card signup bonus
5% on Amazon and Amazon-owned companies
2% on gas and restaurants
1% on everything else
I applied for the Wells Fargo Active Cash to get 2% off everything and a $200 conditional sign-up bonus. Denied??? My credit score is no problem, but they apparently didn't like me having a single card and no debt. At least that's what I gleaned from the reasons they gave me. I'll wait a payment cycle to have some Chase card activity and try again.
Out of the blue, I get no-brainer upgrade offer from Capital One. Upgrade my 1% Rewards to the Quicksilver 1.5% card. Upgrades allow you to keep the same card number and don't trigger a hard credit inquiry. Done in no-time flat. See: Upgrading Your Credit Card: What to Know | Capital One
Even though it's only 1.5%, I like the Capital One cards. Why? Because they have virtual numbers that are only good at a single merchant. I have a different virtual number at every website I use for recurring purchases. Utilities, memberships, etc. I'll keep the Quicksilver card for that and use my Chase card for everything else until I can get Wells Fargo Active Cash. (I have a Wells Fargo bank account.)
