I appreciate adult children helping their parents with tax preparation. Discussing the returns is tricky when there is no POA on file due to confidentiality issues. In addition, I am always concerned about the potential for children to take advantage of parent.
Regarding errors. There are times when a client thinks there are errors when an omission or alternative treatment makes no difference. There could also be spelling errors that have no consequence. Finally, there may be errors on the clients end. Discussing errors that are trivial and have no affect could be difficult for me to mask my irritation on a stressful day. Otherwise, we encourage our clients to review the end product and want them to find errors before it gets filed. It saves us lots of extra work.
