I can see how that would be a big problem as a business traveller, especially if you have to make presentations. Don't anyone carry a briefcase anymore?The disincentive for many customers in checking a bag isn't the cost in fees but the risk that it might become lost or delayed. The results can be inconvenient or catastrophic.
Until recently we have always checked our bags. In all our years of travel, over Europe and Asia and domestic, our bags arrived late may be 2 or 3 times (always Domestic). The airline delivered it to our house. Never lost a bag.
Have the airlines become slackers, now that they can charge for checked bags?
