Personal Consumer Issues • Re: Need car for 2 years: buy vs. lease?

Quick update: we ended up leasing a Hyundai Ioniq 5 SEL for 13 months. It ended up being $4800. We can extend ANOTHER 3 months, which would be pretty ideal since we will almost certainly be out of the country for at least a year starting May 2026.

It’s probably not the most economical option, but it was easy, and we can buy the car out for $32k if we decide to stay.

I’ve never owned or leased a new car, and I have to admit that it’s nicer than I’d imagined. The modern safety features (which are obviously not unique to this car) are great. And since I can charge for free at work, I’m hoping that our operating costs will be minimal over the next 16 months.

Thanks all!
Congrats! $369/month all in is close to the most economical option, if we are talking comparable options. Chevy Equinox EV is the other one in that price range these days.
