Personal Consumer Issues • Re: Tea: recommendations, loose leaf vs. bagged, switching from coffee?

For easy and mild I think you can start with bags of green tea from the grocery. If you use a tea kettle with adjustable temperature lower the setting. Some will have a dial with a green tea setting. If the water is too hot, then the tea can taste a little bitter. Some tea companies will add some white tea or other in anticipation of this issue but the best thing is to lower the water temp from 212 to 175 degrees. Your local Asian grocery store might have jasmine in bags, which makes it easier to try.

Once the temperature is right, you can adjust the length of time the bag is in the cup. If you look at your watch or a timer you will be able to dial in how long to leave it that is right for you. Loose tea is more sensitive to time and temp., but bags are a great place to get started

If you decide you like green tea, then graduating to loose leaf may make sense. Jasmine or Sencha are good first try teas IMO but if you order from Upton or similar, they will often have sampler packs that can be fun. I would not start with Oolong due to the smokiness.

Can anyone recommend a good variety of green tea for a green tea newbie?

I've always preferred black tea in the morning, but want to try something new. I was planning on visiting one of the local Asian grocery stores to see what loose leaf teas they have, but I don't know the difference between jasmine, oolong, sencha, etc.

I''m pretty new to green tea so I want to start with something easy and mild :happy
