I agree in general although with services like Lyft and Uber and the success Waymo is having this might change; they seem to be winning the SD race right now. Our target destination would most likely be Baltimore or MD suburb of DC. Less likely but possible is to return to Boston. My SIL is late 60s and has never driven. She lives in the East Bay area of greater SF and seems to get by fine.Unfortunately environments where you do not need a car seem to be very rare in North America. A few big cities and specific areas in them (NYC, Chicago, Boston (ish), Washington DC (small part of total metropolitan area), Baltimore (ditto), San Francisco (maybe?), Portland (maybe?)). Also some towns, particularly college towns?
A good friend of mine had a neighbor who was older. He and his wife were returning from the airport after a transatlantic flight. He dozed off, ran off the road into a tree. They were both trapped in the car. He watched his wife die beside him but recovered with some physical impairment. I don't plan to be that guy.
