I always do "what ifs" with spreadsheet to determine optimal approach for us. I agree with someone earlier that going to the top of IRMAA tier 1 and 22% tax rate is usually a good strategy.

I do not think Roth is overly complex but you have to run the numbers to see if it makes sense for you. Quick answers, even by an expert, are not the best approach.
