Perhaps this is something for your son to handle on his own without undue influence.

Yes, "independence" is important, but if there is a problem with something that is relatively important ("sleep" does come to mind here!), then... that's often when parents are likely to be of help. Indeed, it's usually part of "the job description"...
If he was "on his own", that would be different.
However, even then, if he was "having a problem" and asked for help, that's also what parents can be for, along with some other relatives and friends.
