Personal Consumer Issues • Re: Genealogy research

On the free side I was able to get a lot from FindAGrave.com, which Ancestry links to. Again, I was very familiar with the places, and was readily able to find most all the burial info that was possible to know.
Just a word of caution. Find a Grave information is input by users like me and requires no evidence of support and I have found numerous errors over the years, including incorrect parents and/or siblings and lots of wrong dates. Correcting false information requires requesting the person who created the memorial page to accept the suggested correction which sometimes goes unanswered. I take information there with a grain of salt until proven elsewhere.
I have corrected many records on Find a Grave and always mention I have corroborating evidence for my change request. Some people take photos of entire graveyards and I came to recognize the page managers for many of my relatives. Most of the time I am adding siblings or children to connect them to their parents, but sometimes connecting spouses who are on the same stone.

If the page manager does not reply within 30 days, the change will go in automatically. I have also requested to manage the memorials of my parents, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Correcting the burial records was important to me, since the site is free and could be useful to others going forward. My husband and I have walked many cemeteries and found relatives who were not listed or listed incorrectly.
