The difference is the meaning of "gain"
Ah, I see. I should have used the word "benefit" and not "gain" in this discussion. :)

Years ago, I sold shares near the time the market opened. See: viewtopic.php?p=2601576#p2601576

The shares dropped by about 4.5% within a few hours and before the market close. If I had not made that trade, then I would not have benefited. That one trade probably made up for a lifetime of any bid/ask spreads that I have or ever will pay.
