This is a great point about the hose freezing, I've had that happen to my sump pump when it gets really cold out. For the humidifier, the installers ran a hose to where our washer discharges, not sure if it's still the code but apparently it was back then.I have an Aprilaire 700 and like some of the other models mentioned, it uses hot water to saturate a pad. The excess water runs into the condensate pump and is then pumped outside. The problem in the winter is that the discharge tube will freeze over if it's cold enough. Then the condensate tank fills up and will shut off the furnace. I found this out one winter. It's can be devilishly tricky to adjust the valve feeding the humidifier so that you're not sending too much excess water to the unit and then just pumping it outside. I wish I had a basement drain to dump into.
