The aurora are best seen between October and March.
We saw them this past January in Tromso and Alta. We were blessed with clear skies, but one can’t expect that.
Highly recommend that you join a tour group taking you outside the city into dark(er) sky country.
I got fantastic photos with my IPhone 15 Pro. Whatever camera you use, read up on the best settings and bring a tripod to stabilize the imagine.
