Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Re: Social Security and Government Pension (Calpers)

Short answer: No
The WEP affects retired- or disabledworker beneficiaries and their eligible dependents.
However, it does not affect survivor beneficiaries.
Long answer:
https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/IF/IF10203

Also, if you have 30 years of substantial earns, WEP doesn't apply anyway.
Thanks. I read that .pdf and it is still a bit confusing to me.

Assumption = my SS = $4614; spouse's Calpers = $3188 * spouse did not pay into SS while on the Calpers job

So if I pass away first, my spouse will receive her $3188 from Calpers, and my reduced SS survivor benefit at $2489 due to GPO (reducing my SS survivor by 2/3 of my spouse's Calpers).

If my spouse passes away first, I will receive my own SS at $4614 / month, and my SS is not affected no matter how much I receive from my spouse's Calpers beneficiary/survivor benefit?

Thanks for making it simple for me.
That sounds right.
