To you and everyone else replying about the "precious metals," you were correct. There was a safe in the house that I was unaware of. There is a turn dial on the safe, which my sister does not know the combination to. She is having a locksmith come by next week to install one of those keyless entry locks on the front door, and will ask them to see if they know of a way to open the safe at that time.Sorry for your family’s loss. From a person who had bought and held precious metals and coins since 1992, I might be able to shed some light on item number 5. When a person says, ‘precious metals,’ this will usually equate to stored physical coins and bullion somewhere. They would not be listed on an account statement as such.5. Somewhere in the deceased husbands’ notes, he mentioned having $20,000 worth of “precious metals.” I think we have been through every account in all of the papers, etc., and cannot find anything with such an amount or anything “precious metals”-specific. Any suggestions for how we might track this down?
If the immediate inventorying of the residence and personal effects finds nothing, I would venture that if they existed, they would be stored in a safe deposit box at a bank, and there could be more than one box. I know many who do this and do not document the facts of the box(es). Banks usually auto-debit the annual rental fee, and it could be listed on one of the monthly statements or separate letters. As it sounds like the husband was managing most of the financial picture, the sister could be unaware of the box contents or the existence of the safe deposit box(es).
While this is a low priority item on the list, eventually it will desire closure. I would look at this avenue after the larger items are moving along. Best wishes.
I don't suppose any of you knows how to get a safe open...
