Thanks to everyone who has replied. I'm learning more as I go further through the process to see what might be available. Currently have a security clearance, and I'm in the process of getting a TS.
This has truly been a stressful and crazy time in our lives, and we're considering multiple potential paths forward.
Living somewhere else might entail buying or renting. Buying, we could swing a down payment to have a little more room. A 45-60 minute commute would be doable in a car, and probably a little longer by rail. That's assuming it's at the Pentagon since I don't believe there's full public transportation to Andrews.

Thanks, and we will look at those counties and schools. It would likely be at Andrews AFB or the Pentagon. A few people I've spoken to have suggested living on base at JBAB if that's available. The proximity to D.C. looks nice for staying busy with the kids, but I can't tell overall if that's a good or bad location. Driving to Andrews or taking the metro to the Pentagon both look doable from there. That said, assuming it is Andrews AFB, Pentagon or parts East or Northeast of city, I'd suggest Anne Arundel County or even Calvert County. The schools are (generally) rated higher than PG County or other relatively affordable areas around DC. A city like Crofton, for instance, has tons of military /govt workers, great schools, tons and tons of sports options and likely a home for $500k or so.

All noted. We recognize the tuition would be high and hence potentially only sending one to a private school. If we found a good district we'd be comfortable sending all three of them. If the job is at Andrews, it would be potentially easier to make grocery runs. On that front, we currently pay around $11-1200/month for a family of 5 currently. Understand prices will be higher in the Mid-Atlantic.One potential hitch could be the cost of private schools in the National Capital Region. The tuition, fees, etc. are quite steep in this area. Also consider the logistics of getting your son there each day if you may be going down to a single car.
Also realize that if you live anywhere west, north, or due east of DC, you likely won't have the benefit of a Commissary or AAFES around, unfortunately. Those are only available at/near Ft. Myer, Ft. Belvoir, JB Andrews, JB Bolling, Ft. Meade, or way down at Quantico.
We anticipate that by the time of a potential relocation, he would need to be seen about 1-2 times per month. We just want to be within 1 hour of his doctor, and we've identified several potential specialists who could accept him. Without going outside the forum rules, the last few months and getting a proper diagnosis were a nightmare. Specialists where we live were surprisingly difficult to come by. While we do expect regular visits in the future, our research seems to suggest that the D.C. region has a higher number of psychiatric specialists available should his condition suddenly change or worsen. How often does your son need to be seen? If it is something like monthly then you could be further out more easily. I like the NoVa suburbs but they are very crowded and dense. Would still be enjoyable for a few years though. Salary should be sufficient. Good luck with everything.
