Personal Consumer Issues • Re: When to rent a car (vs. drive your own)?

I've been known to drive almost 150 miles one way for lunch so I don't consider that "long distance".

I've rented countless vehicles while on travel for work and vacation when I flew. I've only rented a vehicle to use on vacation, leaving from home, one time. We rented a van and removed the back seat so we could carry some furniture to my BIL. On that trip over a long weekend we racked up over 3,000 miles on the van. The morning after we made it back home, I went out to the driveway to return it and it wouldn't start. Dead as a hammer. I called the rental agency and they came and got it...no extra charges.

I buy cars to use and typically buy them new (or demos) and drive them for 10 or more years so I just drive them. We are driving 2007, 2013 and 2017 models right now.

For trips when I'm flying I sometimes take an Uber versus paying for parking. Depends on the number of days of the trip.
