Personal Consumer Issues • Re: Best TV streaming service for 79 year-old father

Another recommendation for the DirectTV Stream service with their Osprey/Gemini box. I think it was specifically designed for the elderly as it comes with an excellent old-school TV remote that should be familiar to anyone who has ever used cable TV in the last 20 years. I believe my folks pay $110 a month or so for the service, down from 300+ from Comcast. They recently released something called the "Gemini Air" which looks a little cheaper -- I'd recommend the slightly older Gemini that has ethernet instead of the completely wireless Air. They sell for 50-100$ or so on eBay/Amazon, so you can hookup multiple TVs on one account cheaply.

Make sure he has a stable Internet connection, install the firmware updates, and hook it up via ethernet instead of wireless for more reliability.

(I second not changing anything for someone at that age, but if you think they'll be willing to experiment and learn it and handle frustration well, by all means try it. Otherwise, there's a reason cable companies are raising cable TV prices astronomically every year -- they know their user base is locked in due to age/illness/familiarity/etc.)
