Personal Investments • Re: Cash holding in retirement

We are ages 81 and 78. We hold about one years worth of expenses in the Vanguard Short-Term Inflation Protected Securities Fund and about 6 months of expenses in the Vanguard U S Treasury Money Market Fund. We never let our bank account balance fall below $3,000 and transfer from our MM fund as needed. RMDs, net of income tax withholding, go partly into our taxable brokerage accounts and the balance into our MM fund - based on anticipated needs for the next year (we take our RMDs in a lump sum in December).

Our expenses are quite variable, impacted by things like the amount of gifting, vacation expenses, home remodeling, automobile purchases, etc.
