Personal Consumer Issues • Re: New iPad Air or 10th gen iPad?

We will travel this summer and next summer (and probably more after that) and dh was thinking that maybe a tablet would be better than taking our laptop. I am sure the iPad 10th generation would be sufficient for our needs (email and surfing the web) however it is almost two years old (new one expected end of this year) and Apple just came out with new iPad Air. I have searched online and read that Apple tends to support iPads 4-7 years. That means the 10th generation could be only two years or so away from not being supported. At Costco the difference in price between the two is $240. We can afford it but just want to make the right decision. Right now I lean towards the Air for the longer support time. Anyone have any opinions?

Thanks!
Just to set your mind at ease, Apple generally fully supports their devices for 6 years after they discontinue selling the device. So your iPad 10th generation should still get support into 2030, despite being 2 years old from initial release.

Apple still supports iPads back to the 6th generation, and iPad Air's back to the 3rd generation.

I'm still on an iPad Air 4th generation with no plans to upgrade anytime soon. It was discontinued in 2022, so I expect another 4-ish years of iOS updates, getting me into 2028. Which assuming it doesn't break is about the time I'll start to think about replacing it. If it breaks between now and then(unlikely), I'll probably replace rather than repair.

$240 difference in price is pretty noticeable, Unless there is some feature you really want, I wouldn't be inclined to pay $240 more. You can also buy refurbished from Apple devices, for usually a substantial discount: https://www.apple.com/shop/refurbished/ipad
