That raises a different question.Maximum recommended by who? I don't think there is a single target date product suite among US fund companies that has int'l equities at 20% of equities or less.20% seems to be the maximum amount recommended...
Because 20% US was exactly what Vanguard was using in its target date and LifeStrategy funds up until 2010.
Indeed, I was holding a mix of individual funds with the intention of having 20% of stocks international. And one year, Fidelity actually included a full 4% allocation to international stocks in its (then-named) Fidelity Spartan Total Market Index Fund. I hadn't noticed that, and the result was that my international allocation had drifted up to something like 20.5%. And Vanguard Portfolio Watch actually displayed a yellow flag warning me that I had >20% in international stocks!
Yes, it is troubling to have Vanguard double its international allocation, with no coherent explanation of why we shouldn't stay the course.
