Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Re: Facing tough job choice - what to do?

All good points and perspectives shared for both sides (I've thought about all at some point).

Someone asked about subject taught and grading time as well. It would be PE/health classes in some combination or possibly aquatics teaching water safety.

Grading would probably be similar. Possibly a little more or a little less so not really an issue. The coaching would be football. I'm fully aware of the time demands as I coached high school for 12 out of 21 years at the high school n level. Took last few years off.

I took a junior high job because it was the only one I could get right out of college and it just seems like once you're a junior high teacher, it's hard to get out of it. I know several people that it played out like that for them too.

This time, it's having to coach to get the daily job. Which I don't mind.

A couple of close friends and former coaching friends do high school and they all say they'd never do junior high (we're all similar personalities).

I do think working in a new environment and with new people could be advantageous. Making new network connections is always a good thing. A chance for a new start. Might lends itself to other new opportunities that I feel are closed to me in current district (potential administration or athletic director).

I have thought about trying to teach and coach at my daughter's private school. The pay difference is too much. It would be close to a 50% pay cut. I thought I might do this when I retire from public school if they had something open. That's still in the back off my mind for insurance and tuition discount.

At the moment, I've been teaching 2 summer school jobs. In person PE and online health. That's been an extra $14-15k. The in person PE summer school sounds like it's going away at both places. The new place problem sooner than current place due to enrollment difference. I don't know if the online course will take a hit or not (state changed graduation requirements-changed PE from 2 credits to 1). Health will probably be fine. With the state changed, this does bring up the concern if the district needs to RIF anyone. I'm safe where I am. I go somewhere new, in low man.

I appreciate everyone's perspectives. I have thought about all off the angles everyone has mentioned. It's wait and see if anything happens and a choice is to be made.
