To make matters worse, the IRS does not accept online statements, like an Amex statement as backing documentation of improvements. They want you to have the actual receipt.
The IRS cannot require a receipt in most cases. This was settled in court in 1930.
Yes, but proving it without receipts can be hard and possibly on the losing end. They may accept credit card statements as proof of you paying something, but there isn't enough detail on the CC statement to discern between a repair and a home improvement and it may end up being disallowed.
