I just turned 77 -- the UConn calculator predicts that I need to extend my financial planning to age 101.
Last March, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer (4 years after my previous colonoscopy). After having surgery, I told my oncologist that I was planning to live another 20 years -- he recommended continued treatment (chemotherapy and classes in "lifestyle treatment"). This treatment has been intense. Not everyone would take this path.
I think that part of the strategy in predicting your longevity is to ask what you are willing to do toward achieving the result you want. My ex-father-in-law gave up pipe-smoking in his 40's -- he passed at 102.
