My wife and I use an advisor for advice only. She will manage money for an AUM if you want, but we choose advice only. Her hourly rate seems high, but her rates escalated a few years ago because of State of Washington regulatory requirements. (typical over reaching government in this state). She has given us good advice, especially when planning for RMDs and other future events. She is about 20 years younger than us, and odds are I will die first. My wife isn't that comfortable with investing and our trusted advisor will be good for my wife when I kick the bucket.
Edward Jones gets ripped on a lot, and for people like Bogleheads, EJ seems like a ripoff. However, my Mom and Dad started using an Ed Jones advisor 40+ years ago. Back then there was not an internet. My Dad passed in 2005 and the Ed Jones guy has been great with my mom ever since. No shady advice, no churning, and he calls her quarterly to give her updates. I'm sure Ed Jones has made a lot of money working with my Mom (and Dad), but she has made even more compared to what would have happened without access to EJ and the markets.
