Personal Consumer Issues • Re: Car question

A 2010 Corolla with only 47k miles does sound appealing for its reliability and low mileage, but the dealer's asking price of $9k does seem a bit steep, especially for a basic model without many extras.

Have you had a chance to inspect the vehicle in person? Sometimes seeing the condition firsthand can give you more leverage in negotiating a lower price, especially if you notice any imperfections or areas that might need attention.

Given the good reputation of Corollas for reliability, a well-maintained one with low mileage like this could be a great choice for a backup car. How does the overall condition of the car look to you?
I haven't seen it in person yet. I'm likely going up on Tuesday to have a look. I did check out the dealership online and was pleasantly surprised to find very few negative reviews. They have a BBB rating of A- which for a car dealership is pretty good. Even one that is on the up & up will inevitably get the odd complaint. I completely agree with you that the ask seems steep. From my research, which has given not always consistent information, the private party fair market value is probably ballparking around $6k. That's taking into consideration the low mileage and assuming the car is in good condition. So I'm assuming that a dealer is going to want at least $7k. And, again assuming the car is as advertised, that seems reasonable and fair. No dealership would have paid much more than $4k for a 15 yo base Corolla with a manual no matter how low the mileage. In this day and age it's unlikely much more than 1 in 5 people even know how to drive one and most of those are going to be over 60. $7500 is probably as much as I would pay for the car. I don't like haggling so I may just offer 7k and stop at 7500 and tell them it's a fair price. Take it or wait for a more gullible customer. The car looks nice but I'm not desperate and have no issues with walking if I think negotiations aren't going well.
