OP - with Venmo you can use it without being "freinds" on the App with anyone (just pay and recieve without making or accepting Freind requests) and make sure to set your default to "private" so if you do inadvertently accept a freind request they won't see your transactions. There always seems to be confusion around this within several threads here on bogleheads/elsewhere.
