If parent can afford to throw away $X in a wedding, they can afford to give $X for the house down payment.

My daughter got married this past June, but I wouldn't characterize my contribution to the celebration as money I "threw away"...Wow.
I come from a culture where the guests of the wedding give enough money to pay for the wedding. The cost is shared among the guests of the wedding. The parents of the bride does not have to pay for the wedding.

My side of the guest to my daughter's wedding give enough money for the wedding plus the honeymoon.

It is apparent the OP is not of your culture as his inquiry was clearly directed to those using the rather traditional approach.
From my perspective, it is not appropriate to invite people and expect them to pay for drinks or anything. I also am fairly confident my daughter wants a "traditional" wedding, knows eloping would be cheaper.
