I took 15 years off from practicing law to raise our children, support wife's career, and rehab/reconstruct our houses. I did, however, teach law half-time for all but two of the hiatus years. To top it off, we moved several states away (DW's career) toward the end of the hiatus. Once our youngest obtained his drivers' license, we decided I should go back to work to pay for colleges.
Due to the hiatus, I had to take the bar exam in our new state....
Was not easy finding a job. I was in the nice position in/after law school of receiving offers at every firm I interviewed with--often before I left the interviews. In my late 40s, it was not so easy!
But, as someone above noted, it only takes one potential employer to make it work. During the follow up to interviews with a likely firm, I offered to come in as a probationary employee for X (6?) months, at a very reduced salary (I think 50% of what young guns were starting out at my former firm?); that was accepted. Less than 6 weeks later, I was full time, full comp. I stayed there for 9 years, when we retired.
Based upon later discussions with the guys who hired me, the fact that I had stayed somewhat active via teaching helped persuade them to take the risk with me.
OH--for chronological perspective, I came back into full-time work in 2008.
