Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Re: Should you retire early? A few notes, six months in.

I have to admit, I was darn happy living in a house with my friends in college partying all the time. Life was good and easy. But there is no way I can do that today with a family. Nor do I want to. I grew up. I loved my backpacking trip through Europe sleeping in youth hostels, trains, or the airport floor. We did it on as cheap as possible. We ate unhealthy food that was cheap to sustain ourselves. There is no way I would want to do it again. Nor do I want to eat like that again. We spend a decent amount of money making sure our food is of higher quality (because we could.)
I had these great experiences too, and wouldn't want to repeat them at 50 again either. However, I think there's a middle path here for the early retiree. For example, I can travel frugally but well by mixing in developing countries, slow travelling with airbnb, travelling off peak days/seasons, etc. You can eat well and cheaply - beans, if prepared correctly, taste better to me than steak, and are probably more healthy. You can err in either direction here - eating ramen on the one hand, status trinkets on the other.
