This.I think you are making a mountain out of a a molehill. Just put a stop payment on the original check, and cut him a new one. This happens in business al the time. If it makes you more comfortable, you can write in the Memo field: replaces check xx, dated Jan 1.
Bogleheads always seem to turn “run of the mill” inconveniences into potentially disastrous problems. I once (gasp) accidentally wrote in an amount slightly too high on a check to a contractor. I called him and he brought the excess cash ($200) over to my house. We both chuckled. Not everyone is trying to rip you off.
